Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.
As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.

Can Flagyl be taken with food?
Hi,
I had a pretty severe infection with a metronidazole (which I was taking for a week) in August and I was prescribed metronidazole (generic metronidazole) which is a strong antibacterial agent. I've been on this for three months now. I am taking it for 12 months now. I have been feeling better now and I am having an issue with my stomach and am taking my metronidazole. My blood tests have been normal but my symptoms have gotten worse (I have a blood infection) so I am worried that my problem is getting worse. I am very concerned. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Also, I'm worried that my symptoms will get worse. My husband has a history of gallstones and has had gallstones since he was 10. I'm worried about the other symptoms. It's important to me that this medication is used as prescribed. I have been taking it for 14 years and I've not had any issues. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!
A.
